Vintage style playsuit and lace cardigan

Fashion Design: High Street To Designer
If you know the work of Gok Wan, you know what I'm talking about, I'm starting a blog to show how you can do this, locally with just the stores I have in walking distance in Strood, Rochester, and Chatham, these stores will include the likes of; Matalan, Primark, Charity shops, Internacionle, New Look, Peacocks and the only fabric shop in the area, up stairs in the Pentagon shopping centre. As well as many other widly spread stores so even if you don't live in my area, you're bound to find most of the same stores in your's. I'm not a dab hand with needle and thread so don't expect any fancy stitching, but if you like my work then that will make it easier for you to re-create anyway. My first work is a black retro style print play suit from Primark, the print is of  pink Cherrys, its fairly basic. Four buttons applied to the waist and two flairs of fabric, also applied from the waist and a slight detail at the cut of, flowy sleeves, to work this into an outfit I also purchased from a Primark a translusent, cardigan, very thin, with lace detail at the edges around the bust. These two items will provide the initial canvas for my fashion artwork.

What I did:
The Play Suit
My first step to give the playsuit a more expensive look and feel was to line the bottom of the play suit with pink lace, I then continued to do the same to the edges of the flowy fabric comming from the sleaves around the sides of the bust and along the edges of the same flowy fabric around the sides of the waist. As a designer detail I add, above the lace around the bottom of the play suit, a string of metalic pearls. I also hung two more strings of the same pears, one string from each shoulder. I switch the, fairly bland, four, tiny, silver buttons for two pairs of bigger buttons. One pair with the design of an old sailing ship on them, the other with the design of a castle crest on them. I set the two pairsdiagonally opposite their partener on the waist of the play suit. As a final finishing touch I applie a safety pin to the back of a large, silk, purple flower cut from an elastic head band, as a removable brooch.

The cardigan
Instantly I can improve the cardigan with some simple, floral design, over sized studs by appling them down one side of the lace to look like buttons, there are three differnt pairs of studs, I use to pairs along the side as buttons, inter changging the designs as they go down the fabric, the two designs work well together to give a fabulous, and interesting finish.

How to wear it:
Its a girly, floral, fruity look, wear with school girl style, knee high socks (I added two purple, polka dot ribbons, in the shape of bows to the sides of the socks) The perfect accessory to any girly out fit is heels, I wear this out fit with washed out pink, mid heels with a cute bow detail to the front. Because of all the detail to the play suit, minimal jewllary is need to finish the look, maybe use a watch and/or a bangle, something expensive and lady like looking. A simple gold or silver necklace and a cute hair band and your fabulouse outfit is finished.

  1. Hello, you obviously know your stuff but can you do the same with men's clothes? I'm a gentleman of a certain age and I find my choice in shops is limited to jeans and hoodies (Yuk!)or stuff from Marks and Spencer's that makes you look over the hill. Go on have a go, advise and I will follow your directions and let you know the result!
